Silk Abaca - CA
Silk Abaca
Is the blend of silk and abaca fibres and is a relatively new fabric to the millinery trade. This vibrant material is made by weaving silk threads through the processed stalks of the abaca tree. Abaca is a variant of banana palm from the Philippines.
The abaca fibres are the warp threads running lengthwise (or longitudinal) which are held stationary in tension on the weaving frame.
The silk threads are the weft. They are on a shuttle which runs crosswise (or transverse) and is drawn through and inserted over-and-under the warp.
The finished fabric is strong, has a unique sheen, and is easy to colour with silk dyes.
When twisted and shaped silk abaca creates amazing trims.
